Built by Paro Penlop (Governor) Tshering Penjor around, Ugyen Pelri Thang Palace is concealed in the woods, enclosed by the perimeter wall. Modeled after Zangopelri, a celestial palace of Guru Rinpoche, it functions as a royal residence in Paro. Beside Ugyen Pelri Palace, there are five square chortens, built in memory of the first king of Bhutan, Ugyen Wangchuck.
