An ancient myth tells us that Vientiane was created by the seven headed Naga Souvannanak. Originally called Ban Nong Khanthae Phiseuanam, it was originally a village. It later became “Vientiane” town under the leadership of the first Governor, Bourichan or Phraya Chanthabouly Pasitthisak, between 430-120 B.C. In 1357 King Fa Ngoum held celebrations for the great victory to unify all Lao territories. This enhanced his prestige and power over the nobility throughout the Lane Xang and neighboring kingdoms. In 1560, King Saysettha moved from Luang Prabang to declare Vientiane as the capital city of the Lane Xang kingdom.

According to myth Vientiane was created by the Naga Souvannanak who instructed Prince Thattaradtha to start a new city on the eastern bank of the river opposite Maha Thani Si Phan Phao. It became Vientiane when named by the first Governor, Bourichan or Phraya Chanthabouly Pasitthisak, between 430-120 B.C. Having been razed by Siamese forces in 1827 it fell into ruin and was almost swallowed up the encroaching jungle. However, it passed into French rule in 1893 and it was they who built the beautiful impressive city that your Laos holiday will uncover.
