Overview

Pay a visit to the temple of Apollo, one of the major attractions of the sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi. The temple which is in ruins is believed to have housed the Omphalos, the traditional “navel” of the world, and later claimed as the stone that Kronos swallowed in place of Zeus. It is a temple worth exploring to learn more about the ancient culture and traditions of the Greek.

Description

The temple of Apollo is a major attraction of the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi. You can see the large polygonal retaining wall, which provides the temple with a solid foundation. The remains which we see here have survived since the 14th century BC. It is one of the three such temples built on this location. Although the interior of the temple is totally damaged and is believed to have housed the Omphalos, the traditional “navel” of the world, later it was claimed as the stone that Kronos swallowed in place of Zeus. It is said that the first temple of Apollo at Delphi was made of Laurel branches, the second of beeswax and feathers, and the thirds of bronze while the fourth was built by the legendary architects Trofonios and Agamedes aided by Apollo himself. This temple was destroyed in 548 BC by a fire. Later the temple was rebuilt by both Greeks and non Greeks and was completed in 510 BC by the Alkmaeonid family of Athens. This temple was of the Doric order and had 6 columns at the front and 15 columns at the sides. Antenoe decorated this temple with sculptures. The east pediment depicted Apollo’s epiphany: the chariot of the gods occupied the centre of the scene and was framed by male and female figures. On the west Pediment, the figures of Athena, a fallen giant, a male figure and two horses have survived.
