Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Guruvayur temple is known as the Dwarka of the south. The main deity is Mahavishnu, worshipped according to the pooja routines laid down by Adi Sankaracharya. Known as Bhuloka Vaikuntham (home of Lord Vishnu on Earth), it is one of the important Krishna temples in Kerala.

Located in the Guruvayur town of Thrissur district in Kerala, visit to Guruvayur temple is an invigorating experience. The Mahavishnu idol established in the temple is made of a special stone called black antimony and is said to possess medicinal properties. Every morning the God is anointed in til oil and then sprinkled with a special cleansing powder made of herbs known as “vaka”. Light brown in colour, this herb paste gives an added hue to the idol. To have a glimpse of this charismatic sight, thousands of people go to the temple at 3 AM. Water consecrated with mantras is then poured over the idol for his ritual bath. This holy water is then eagerly drunk by the devotees since it is said to contain a little of the miraculous properties of the stone of which the idol is made.
